Green ribbon garters with crochet trim and French knot embroidery, 1920s, USA Photography by Tigz Rice Studios. From The Underpinnings Museum collection.

Date:  c. 1920s

Origin: United States

Fabric: Silk

Brand: Custom made

A pair of garters with a base of green silk ribbon machine stitched to an elastic base. The edges have been delicately crocheted with cream yarn, and the entire length of the garter is embellished with hand embroidered pale pink French knots. The focal point of the garters is a pair of peach silk ribbonwork flowers with blue French knot embroidery at the centre.

Garters were commonly worn to keep stockings up just above the knee until the popularisation of suspenders, whether attached to corsets or a belt. Until the invention of elastic, garters were tied onto the body with ribbon. Elastication allowed for a more comfortable and flexible fit.
