Black Cotton Tulle Ruffle Bra

Black Cotton Tulle Ruffle Bra, c. 1930s, France, The Underpinnings Museum. Photography by Tigz Rice.

Date: c. 1930s

Origin: France

Fabric: Cotton tulle, rayon satin ribbon

Brand: Unknown

A triangle cup style bra of cotton bobbinet tulle, with tulle ruffles stitched to the cup outer in a spiral shape. This style of ruffle appliqué was likely intended to boost the wearer’s bust size whilst retaining a ‘natural’ appearance, in a similar manner to these ruffled bust pads. The shoulder straps and underband are formed of rayon satin ribbon, and a small length of buttonhole elastic and accompanying button form a closure at the centre back.
