Date: c. 1890-1900s

Origin: United States

Brand: L. F. Grammes & Sons

This decorative wooden box was intended for the storage of hosiery. It is embellished with decorative pyrography, a technique where designs are burned into the wood. The stockings found within the box were likely added at a much later date, with their styles dated from around the 1920s.

The hinges are engraved with the company name, L. F. Grammes & Sons. It was founded in 1875, in Allentown PA and specialized in sheet metal products and metalwork equipment. The company closed in 1960. A number of decorative boxes were made around the late 19th century with these pyrographic techniques, mostly for tobacco or cigar storage.
