Ombré Mesh Bodysuit By The Lake & Stars

Ombré Mesh Bodysuit By The Lake & Stars, 2010, USA. The Underpinnings Museum. Photography by Tigz Rice

Date: Autumn/Winter 2010

Origin: United States

Fabric: Nylon/elastane blend stretch mesh

Brand: The Lake & Stars

This body is comprised of tie-dyed sheer stretch meshes, layered and panelled across the body for varying opacities and graphic lines, highlighted by black satin elastic trims. The bust of the bodysuit has a built in bra, structured with built in centre darts that are reminiscent of 1940s styles. The layered fabrics at the bust are particularly noteworthy, with a graphic dot-patterned lace that carries a light sheen sandwiched between two layers of dyed mesh. It gives an almost moiré effect to the garment.

The back fastening of the garment is particularly noteworthy for a piece of contemporary lingerie, using a hook and row of eyelets. Although such fastenings were commonplace in 1950s bra styles, modern garments tend to rely on pre-made hook and eye tapes.

The Lake & Stars was launched in Spring 2007 by designers Nikki Dekker and Maayan Zilberman in New York, USA, creating lingerie and swimwear that bridged the gap between everyday and boudoir styling. The brand had numerous stockists worldwide such as Barneys and Net-A-Porter, and collaborated with numerous retailers and designers such as Urban Outfitters, &Other Stories and Kate Spade. The label released its final collection in 2013.
