Peach Pleated Silk Crepe & Machine Embroidered Lace Step In

Peach Pleated Silk Crepe & Machine Embroidered Lace Step In, c. 1920s, Great Britain. The Underpinnings Museum. Photography by Tigz Rice

Date: c. 1920s

Origin: Great Britain

Fabric: Silk crepe, machine embroidered tulle

Brand: Custom made

A step in made from fine silk crepe and machine embroidered bobbinet tulle trims. The silk is finely pleated, with the neckline trim and waistline drawstring channel both delicately appliqué stitched onto the garment. Wide panels of embroidered tulle are inserted into the sides of the legs, showcasing an intricate botanical design.  The garment fastens at the centre back with a row of shell buttons and a bow tie to cinch the waistline. This cinched silhouette suggests that this piece is from the end of the 1920s.
