Pointed Tea Rose Brocade Coutil Girdle With Side Lacing

Pointed Tea Rose Brocade Coutil Girdle With Side Lacing, c. 1930s, France. The Underpinnings Museum. Photography by Tigz Rice

Date: c. 1930s

Origin: France

Fabric: Coutil

Brand: Unknown

A short girdle in a tea rose pink brocade coutil, with a panel of heavy elastic forms the centre back. Unusually, the girdle laces at a side seam, with a hook and eye opening at the other side seam. 4 elastic suspender straps are finished with garter grips of metal and rubber. The girdle is structured throughout with a mix of flat and spiral steel bones. 1930s shapewear saw a shift to a more curved silhouette, after the 1920s focused on streamlined and straight lines.
