'Maison Atelier Edition' Feather Bra By La Perla

'Maison Atelier Edition' Feather Bra By La Perla, 2016, Italy. The Underpinnings Museum. Photography by Tigz Rice.

Date: 2016

Origin: Italy

Fabric: Nylon tulle, silk satin, goose feathers

Brand: La Perla

An underwired bra in silk satin and fine nylon tulle that has been embellished with multi-coloured goose feathers. The feathers have been glued to the base tulle of the bra cups and cradle, with hand dyed red feathers placed in rosette like patterns. This bra was released as part of La Perla’s ‘Haute Couture’ collection, which was unveiled with a catwalk at Paris’ Hôtel Salomon de Rothschild. This bra originally retailed for $3074 and was the subject of much media attention due to its price.

La Perla was founded in 1954 in Bologna, Italy, by master corsetmaker Ada Masotti. The brand’s name (‘the pearl’) came from the decision to present lingerie as fine jewellery, with the associations of luxury and femininity. The first brand collections were even presented in velvet-lined boxes. The brand treated lingerie as a fashion accessory rather than simply a clothing necessity, using fine fabrics such as French leavers laces, and silks.
