Lingerie clips were popularised in the 1920s as a product that prevented unsightly lingerie shoulder straps from emerging from newly fashionable sleeveless dresses. This jewellery was made with three clips linked by a chain, allowing the shoulder straps of a bra or slip to be anchored in beneath outer clothing.
Lingerie clips varied greatly in design, from plain utilitarian to elaborate filigree gold. This particular example would have come from the lower end of the market and was likely mass manufactured, with a pretty Art Nouveau design stamped into each clasp.
