Bobbinet Tulle & Silk Georgette Floral Appliqué Suspender Belt, c. 1920s, USA. The Underpinnings Museum. Photography by Tigz Rice.

Date: c. 1920s

Origin: United States

Fabric: Cotton bobbinet tulle, silk georgette, elastic

Brand: Custom made

A suspender belt made in a fine cotton bobbinet tulle, embellished with intricate floral silk appliqué embroidery and silk ribbons. The garment fastens at the rear with metal hooks and eyes over a silk satin placket, with three short strips of elastic offering the garment a little fit flexibility. The belt has four elastic suspender straps, with metal adjusters and clips.

The 1920s saw the phasing out of heavy corsetry, and a movement towards lighter weight styles like girdles and suspender belts. This suspender belt would have offered a previously unheard of flexibility of movement, whilst keeping stockings more securely in place than elastic garters.
