Cross Stitch & Silk Ribbon Tie Garter

Cross stitch garter with ribbon tie, c. 1820s. From The Underpinnings Museum collection Photography by Tigz Rice

Date:  c. 1820s

Origin: Great Britain

Fabric: Cotton with silk ribbon

Brand: Custom made

Before the invention and popularisation of elastication, women and men would wear their stockings with garters that tied just above or below the knee. These garters would traditionally have a strip of embellished fabric, often embroidered, leading to ribbon ties.

This example has a strip of cross-stitch embroidery and green silk ribbon ties. Unfortunately due to the age of this garment and originally poor conservation, one of these ties has completely broken off and disintegrated, whilst the other is in poor condition. This garter would have originally been part of a matching pair.
