Date: c. 1960s
Origin: USA
Fabric: Silk satin, machine-made lace
Brand: Juel Park
A camisole crafted from green silk satin, and cream machine-made lace. The garment is luxuriously constructed. It is cut on the bias, a method that involves cutting the garment with a 45 degree angle, giving it a small degree of stretch that lends the fabric a better drape, but incurs more fabric waste and requires greater skill to execute. It is stitched with hand finished French seams, a technique of enclosing any raw fabric within the seam. The shoulder straps are formed from twin strips of silk rouleau, which are tied into decorative bows. Lace is appliquéd throughout the neckline and hem and is entirely hand stitched. This style of hand stitched lace appliqué was a signature technique of the Juel Park label.
The eponymous Juel Park brand was founded in 1929, when the founder was just 22. She became renowned for her exquisite couture lingerie, with a wealth of celebrity and high society clients.
