Ivory Quilted Satin Suspender Belt With Button Fastenings

Ivory Quilted Satin Suspender Belt With Button Fastening, c. 1940s, Great Britain. The Underpinnings Museum. Photography by Tigz Rice

Date: c. 1940s

Origin: Great Britain

Fabric: Rayon satin

Brand: Custom made

This suspender belt appears to have been custom made for its original owner, alongside another similar piece in the collection made of pale pink satin.  There is no stretch or flexibility of fit to this garment, so it would have fit its owner exactly. The fabric is an ivory rayon satin, and is embellished with diamond motif quilting. Suspender straps are created from a decorative ruffled elastic, with ivory satin covers and brass metal adjusters. The suspender grips are created from metal, rubber and ivory ribbon. The garment closes at the centre back with a row of buttons and satin loops.
