Pink Ribbon Garter With Blue Crochet Trim & Cream Rosette

Pink Ribbon Garter With Blue Crochet Trim & Cream Rosette, c. 1920s, USA. The Underpinnings Museum. Photography by Tigz Rice

Date: c. 1920s

Origin: United States

Fabric: Silk

Brand: Custom made

A pair of garters with a base of  elastic with a layer of silk ribbon sewn to the exterior, trimmed with a pale blue crochet edge. French knot embroidery spans the circumference of the garter in pale blue, and an ivory silk satin ribbon rosette (now unfortunately shattered) forms a focal point.

Garters were commonly worn to keep stockings up just above the knee until the popularisation of suspenders, whether attached to corsets or a belt. Until the invention of elastic, garters were tied onto the body with ribbon. Elastication allowed for a more comfortable and flexible fit.
