Cut Away Black Satin Bra

Cut Away Black Satin Bra, c. 1930s, Switzerland. The Underpinnings Museum. Photography by Tigz Rice

Date: c. 1930s

Origin: Switzerland

Fabric: Rayon satin, cotton voile

Brand: Unknown

A bra in black rayon satin with a slightly sheer cotton voile top cup. A band of satin at the underbust has pieces of steel boning stitched inside vertically for a more secure fit, with the band only attached to the bottom portion of each cup to create graphic cut outs. A small strip of button hole elastic with a button fastening provides some fit flexibility at the centre back. The cup cut is typical of the 1930s, giving a gentle amount of lift to the bust, whilst still retaining a relatively ‘natural’ profile.
