Hand Embroidered Nylon Waist Cincher With Elastic Gussets & Suspenders By Préger, c. 1950s, France. The Underpinnings Museum. Photography by Tigz Rice.

Date: c. 1950s

Origin: France

Fabric: Nylon, elastic, cotton tulle

Brand: Préger

A waist cincher of woven nylon with elastic panelling and cotton tulle trims. It is relatively unstructured, with a hook and eye fastening at the centre front and minimal steel bones throughout the body. A wide elastic panel at the centre back and elastic gores at the front hip offer additional fit flexibility. A waist tape of firm elastic is applied to the interior waist. The silhouette of the garment is somewhat unusual; it s a relatively short cut throughout the body, though the centre front panel extends quite deeply into a pair of suspender straps, reminiscent of early 20th c. corsetry. The suspender straps are created from button hole elastic, and can be adjusted with a plastic button by the suspender grips.

The cincher appears to be unworn, and is created with numerous luxurious construction techniques. A number of the interior bone channels are lined with plush silk velvet. The elastic waist tape is held in place with intricately hand stitched ‘X’ motifs.
