Sheer Nylon & Lace Soft Bra By Christian Dior

Sheer Nylon & Lace Soft Bra By Christian Dior, c.1970s, France. The Underpinnings Museum. Photography by Tigz Rice

Date: c. 1970s

Origin: France

Fabric: Nylon mesh, leavers lace, elastic

Brand: Christian Dior

A darted soft cup bra in fine nylon with a leavers lace trim along the neckline. The underband is trimmed with plush elastic strapping, which leads to a centre back enamelled metal hook closure. The shoulder straps are made of satin ribbon and feature plastic adjusters and rings. The bra was altered by its original owner for an improved fit, with an additional dart stitched into the side of each cup by hand.

The styling of this bra was likely the brand’s attempt to capitalise on the popularity of Rudy Gernreich’s ‘No Bra Bra‘: an unstructured, darted nylon bralet that captured the zeitgeist of late 1960s and early 1970s fashion, favouring freedom of movement and comfort.
