Bandage Mesh Reflective Bodysuit by Rachel Freire

Bandage Mesh Reflective Bodysuit by Rachel Freire, 2010, UK. The Underpinnings Museum. Photography by Tigz Rice.

Date: 2010

Origin: United Kingdom

Fabric: Nylon lycra mesh

Brand: Rachel Freire

This bodysuit stands as a contradiction to most modern lingerie and straddles the boundary between underwear, outerwear and costume. It was part of the Autumn/Winter 2010 collection ‘Future Noir‘ and was initially styled with a mirrored shoulder piece. Using traditional lingerie fabrics and components such as stretch nylon and suspender grips, the bodysuit is constructed in an ‘unfinished’ manner, leaving trailing overlock threads, raw cut fabric edges and deliberately rough hand stitching. Reflective fabric has been twisted into hand sewn tubes that trail around the body, appearing a muted silver under most conditions, with a harsh reflection under the right lighting conditions. The sheer peach mesh appears almost invisible against pale skin, and is layered into bandage-like layers and thigh garters, held up by the built in suspender straps.

Rachel Freire is a clothing and specialist leatherwear designer based in London, with a background in Fine Art and a degree in Design for Performance from Central St Martins. Her eponymous fashion label was launched at London Fashion Week 2009.
