This library documents our collection of digital garment patterns. These digital patterns are developed from the original historical garments in our collection and are offered as study resources through our digital store on Etsy. Each pattern is provided with detailed information and photos about the extant garment.
Stitching instructions are provided for some patterns, but others are offered without and intended only for very advanced sewists. Some patterns are only offered in the original size of the extant garment, and a selection has been graded to a more extensive size range. Please note that we are limited in the sizes that we can offer on graded styles. Not every style is suitable for grading, and there are limitations to the sizes that can be offered before the fit and shape are distorted.
Alongside historical styles, we also offer a range of licensed contemporary corset patterns from the designer ‘Sparklewren’, which were originally released alongside our 2020 retrospective exhibition about the brand. These patterns have been digitised and graded through a range of sizes.
All of our patterns are offered solely as digital PDF files for home printing and can be purchased in our Etsy store. Profits from pattern sales support The Underpinnings Museum directly, allowing us to keep this website free access, fund new acquisitions, photoshoots and exhibitions.
If you’ve used one of our patterns to create a garment and are happy to share photos, we would love to see your work – please get in touch!
