Schiffli Embroidery & Cotton Tulle Bandeau Bra

Schiffli Embroidery & Cotton Tulle Bandeau Bra, c. 1920s, GB. The Underpinnings Museum. Photo by Tigz Rice

Date: c.1920s

Origin: Great Britain

Fabric: Schiffli embroidery and cotton tulle

Brand: Unknown

A simple bandeau bra with a body of Schiffli embroidered tulle and cup inserts of lightweight cotton voile, trimmed with a soft cotton tulle on the neck and underbust edges. The fixed length straps are made of a rayon ribbon. The bra is machine stitched but been altered a number of times: darts were inserted at the centre front to take the bra in. Later in the 20th century that back fastening was replaced with cord elastic loops, presumably because the original elastic fastening had perished. This bra gives a flattened bust shape, as was considered the fashionable silhouette during the 1920s.

A pattern of this garment can be purchased here.
